Krill Oil: The New Source on Omega-3, DHA, & EPA

Krill oil is a rich source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), omega-3 fatty acids, and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). It also contains choline that contains phospholipids and phosphatidylcholine that are beneficial and easily absorbed by the body. The use of this oil could help lower blood lipids. This oil is a direct substitute to fish oil.

What is a Krill?

Krill are tiny crustaceans that move around in huge swarms. There are around 85 different species of krill. These crustaceans are a chief source of food for whales, penguins, seals, and various other marine creatures. Most common of them are the Euphasia Superba, Antarctic krill, and Euphasia Pacifica these are used for extraction process.

New Supplement

Extracted from Euphasia superba an Antarctic krill, Aker Bio Marine has come up with Superba Krill oil. They primarily feed on microscopic algae, containing long chain omega-3s. The algae are a rich source of astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant that gives the supplement its distinct red color. The algae are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids.  The astaxathin in the supplement keeps Superba Krill fresh, protecting the omega-3 from oxidation. This also means that it does not require any additives to maintain stability for a longer period of time.

The long chain omega-3s present in the krill oil are easily absorbed by the body as they are attached to phospholiphids, which result in higher cellular incorporation. This is converted by the liver before they are absorbed by the body’s cells. This supplement ensures the delivery of the important fatty acids such as DHA and EPA in various parts of the human body, such as joints, brain, and heart.

The Other Omega-3 Supplement on the Block: Neptune Krill Oil (NKO)

Neptune Technologies & Bioressources Inc., announced that their NKO Omega Plus is one of pure krill oils with the highest omega-3 concentrate available in the market. The company harvests Antarctic krill or the Euphasia superb. NKO Omega Plus comes in a bulk softgels or in bulk oil. The supplement contains nearly 30% more omega -3 than its other market competition.  This is possible due to the company’s proprietary extraction process.
